PHYSICIAN-ASSISTED SUICIDE: Mercy or mayhem? (Series)
Physician-assisted suicide for terminally ill patients is legal in four states -- Vermont, Montana, Oregon, and Washington -- as well as in one county in New Mexico. On the following pages, students debate the pros and cons of this life-altering practice.
Life is a mystery that we will never understand. We all know when we are born but we don’t know when we will die. In life, there is both happiness and difficult times. Physician-assisted suicide is unethical because it violates the Oath of Hippocrates, which requires that doctors treat the sick to the best of their abilities and also do no harm. The body is the temple of the Holy Spirit. In God’s eyes, you will never rest in peace if you commit suicide. God is the one who will decide when and how a person will die. If physician-assisted suicide became the law around the world, it would be a disaster. Undoubtedly, teenagers would decide to end their own lives. We are our own worst enemies. Nothing can destroy humanity except humanity itself. So confirm how strong you are in confronting that deadly disease. You can change the world just by fighting until the end.
